House Extension, Blackrock, Cork
This project involves an extension to and respectful renovation of an 1850s built, mid-terraced house in close proximity to Blackrock village in Cork. From a design perspective, we have been guided by the applicant’s requirements and a desire to respect the existing built fabric of this protected structure as well as the existing streetscape, and as such, we have minimised the works to the existing house and kept any external alterations to the rear of the property. The primary objective of the design is to reconfigure the existing kitchen, living and dining spaces and add a functional utility room, to reflect contemporary living habits and needs. By extending into the patio space and using a series of large, linear roof lights we have the opportunity to get ample light into a secluded living space that enjoys connections to the patio and framed views down the garden towards the river. The nature of the extension design, with large expanses of glazing and use of contemporary materials, creates a clear distinction between old and new.
