Extension and Remodeling of Mountpleasant Villas

Mountpleasant Villas Refurbishment

The applicant wished to refurbish this unoccupied neglected dwelling, which would revitalise the existing building and the streetscape in this area.

The current building was in poor repair and in need of extensive work in order to make it habitable. The client intended on creating a high quality urban home while maintaining the integrity and reinvigorating the existing structure. The only external extension to the existing house was a new metal-clad dormer to the new mezzanine space, and associated access stairway to the rear of the property. It draws a clear line between the modern new extension and the existing house and allows the element to stand alone as a sleekly designed contemporary element. The window head and cill heights were reduced to allow for the altered floor levels internally. The window design and size were maintained so the effect on the external elevations was minimal. New roof lights were added to the existing roof to allow light into the en suite mezzanine area and create a light filled double height living space at first floor level. The result is a high quality residence and living space in an urban environment and greatly improves on the existing building which was badly laid out, cramped and dark.
